There are so many benefits to shmiras halashon- if we knew them we’d rush to obtain it!

I think it's important to note that the majority of Jewish people have never heard of the concept of shmiras halashon, let alone the name of The Chofetz Chaim. If the sin is committed, then the vast majority of times it is out of total ignorance. If people knew how much it hurts then we wouldn't make that sin because we all love one another. Could you please elaborate on the concept of onaas devariim, verbal and nonverbal, as well as the proper teshuva for forbidden speech?
