please tell me… Please tell me this isn't representative for "very frum" types! If so that's very depressing. I hope you keep smiling and being friendly to everyone, and that your approach rubs off on the scowling ones. With regards to not talking to you, perhaps they just have a norm in their communities not to talk to people outside their communities? Even so, such a custom doesn't make sense. What is the basis in the Torah for shunning anyone who isn't exactly like you? In the shtetl everyone from skeptics to ignoramuses to tzaddikim mixed freely. Anyway, keep up the good work — as Rebbe Nachman says, a smile can literally give someone life. So you never know, you may be making an impact even on those who won't respond.
