People all over the world, Jew & non-Jew, were delighted that Gilad was freed at last. The Most-High heard our prayers & pleadings for this young man. The life of of one Jew is worth more than the lives of all those who are surrounding Israel. Let us continue to pray for those who are still missing or captive & let us ask our Creator that he bring a great fear upon those killers who were freed recently, so great that they they will never find a place of rest again for themselves.

I heard in shiur on Lekutei Maharon from a leading Beslever Rebbe I heard in a shiur on Lekutei Maharon from a leading Beslever Rebbe that "a Tzadik can make a mistake…but the Tzadik remains a Tzadik and the mistake remains a mistake." Couldn't that principle be applied here perhaps? Or doesn't this at principle at the very least open up a window for other Halachik opinions like the Lebuvitcher Rebbe's ruling.

time changes things Both great Rabbi's are correct. The time scale and the circumstances are not the same.A further interesting point,in the Shalit matter, public opinion via opinion polls indicated the public wanted him free.Think of the pleasure this gives the CREATOR that fellow Jews knowing all the risks wanted him free. The Creator loves to see us care for each other, its part of the purpose of creation! YH in his above comment is of course right. Rabbi Lazer, I love you and I love your articles, but in backing Reb Ovadia, you're backing the wrong horse (borrowing your metaphor). Reb Ovadia admitted making a terrible mistake by backing Oslo, and he's made another tragic mistake with Shalit. The missiles on the south of Israel right now are the result of Israel's capitulation to Hamas.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe’s Position The Shulchan Aruch states clearly that it is prohibited to redeem captives for "more than their value" and the Rebbe spoke at length Motzoei Shabbos Bamidbar 5739 (1979) about the absurdity in releasing 76 terrorists for one soldier, explaining that this will lead to exhorbitant demands in the future and to the kidnapping of many more soldiers. The Rebbe mentioned that is obvious that these terrorists will return to murder Jews, thus placing many more Jews in danger of life, and compared this deal to someone who is receiving a torrent of spit and is rejoicing thinking that it is blessed rain…
