"Shalom, I’m Nachman. What’s your name?"

"David."

"Would you like to be my good friend?"

"Sure!"

Just then, David’s mother called him from her front porch: "David, come home. It’s late and you have to do your homework!"

"I don’t want to come home now!" David yelled at his mother. "You’re bothering me. Can’t you see that I’m playing now?"

Little Nachman didn’t say a word. No one should ever speak with disrespect to a parent, he thought; that’s a terrible sin. A son must be courteous and polite, and heed a parent’s voice.

Nachman went home, stood in front of the open window in his bedroom, and prayed to Hashem:

"Hashem, Creator of the Universe, please have pity on me and help me. Please listen to my prayers and help me find a good friend, an upright boy that loves to learn Torah and to pray. I’ve looked all over, but I haven’t found anyone yet. But You know everything; You see everything! You, Hashem, know who would be a suitable friend for me. So please help me and guide me in the proper path. Guard me from friends that would be bad influences, and help me find good and upright friends."

Nachman finished his prayers and went to sleep.

Nachman went home, stood in front of the open window in his bedroom, and prayed to Hashem…
