There are two types of wicked people. One is entirely wicked and intentionally rebels against God. Another is blinded by the Evil Inclination, and he thinks he is entirely righteous. Even if he studies Torah, prays, and afflicts himself, all his exertion is for naught (Baal Shem Tov).
