Rebbe Menachem Mendel of Kotzk became close to Chassidut when he was a young man. His father asked him: “How can you leave the path I raised you in?” He answered: It says (Exodus 15:2): “This is my God and I will build him a Sanctuary, the God of my father and I will exalt Him.” First comes “my God” – I have to do the will of my Creator as I see it, and afterwards “the God of my father.”
