When the Jewish people stood before Mount Sinai to accept the Torah, G-d said to them: “Bring Me reliable guarantors you will keep the Torah and I will give it to you.” They replied: “Master of the world, our forefathers are our guarantors, our Prophets are our guarantors.” G-d said to them: “They themselves need guarantors, bring Me reliable guarantors and I will give it to you.” They said, “Our children are the guarantors.” G-d said: “These are certainly reliable guarantors, because of them I will give you the Torah!” (Rebbe Meir Ba’al HaNes).
