While he was sulking, Frankie heard a loud noise. Peck-peck-peck-peck… He looked all around and found that this loud noise was coming from a woodpecker. The woodpecker noticed Frankie too and he stopped pecking and came down to meet him. The two of them got along well. The woodpecker said “I will teach you how to be a woodpecker! Just follow me…” And they went off looking for some fresh wood to peck at.
They found a log cabin in the middle of the forest and the woodpecker started pecking at it. Frankie got upset “Excuse me woodpecker”, he said “I think someone lives in that cabin. If you peck at it, they will get angry.”
“Nah”, said the woodpecker “they won’t even notice. Come… help me peck.”
A little uneasy, Frankie started to peck at the cabin too. “OUCH!!!” he cried, “That hurts! I don’t think I’m cut out for pecking”, Frankie said.
The woodpecker said “Aw, come on. Stop being such a baby. Just do it!” Frankie was so embarrassed because his beak was not meant for pecking like the woodpeckers. All of a sudden it started to rain. Frankie heard a scream from inside the log cabin. He flew down to see what was going on through the window and saw water pouring in from the hole the woodpecker made in their ceiling. Frankie knew this kind of trouble was not for him, so he told the woodpecker he had to go home and quickly flew away.
Frankie started to cry. “I’m not a trouble maker, and it hurts to peck. No matter how much I want to be accepted, I’m not going to be like the woodpecker. I don’t even want to fit in with the woodpeckers. But will I ever fit in with anyone? My flakey feet are so ugly. How can I ever be good enough when I’m so gross?”
“Excuse me woodpecker”, Frankie said “I think someone lives in that cabin. If you peck at it, they will get angry.”
