Rebbe Yochanan said in the name of Rebbe Shimon bar Yochai: “The advantage of serving Torah scholars is very great, because it is the means by which we learn their methods in Torah and their ways in good deeds, and it’s preferable to the learning itself. Where do we know this from? As it is written concerning Elisha: ‘Who poured water over the hands of Eliyahu.’ The verse says: ‘he poured,’ and not ‘he learned,’ in order to teach us that serving the scholars is preferable to learning from them.”
