Best Apple Crisp
Is it a side dish, or a dessert? Crisp, or kugel? Just apples, or with cranberries? Either way you serve it up, it's a sure winner with family and guests!
Preparation Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 1-2 hours
Level of Difficulty: Easy
Kashrut Status: Parve
INGREDIENTS
4-5 Granny Smith apples
1 tsp cinnamon
Topping
½ cup oats
½ cup flour
1 stick margarine
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup white sugar
PREPARATION
1. Peel and thinly slice the apples into a bowl. Mix with cinnamon and place in a 9×13 Pyrex or other baking pan.
2. Mix the topping well and spread over the apples.
3. Bake on 180 Celcius (350 Farenheit) for 45-60 minutes, until the top starts to get hard. Don’t let it get too crispy!
4. Lower the temperature to 250C/300F so the apples get softer, another 30-45 min, but the top doesn’t burn.
VARIATION: Add a can of cranberry sauce and mix in with the apples on the bottom. You can use whole berry if you like the pieces, or jellied if you like it soft. Yum!
VARIATION: You can add another half recipe of the topping, and put half of it on the bottom, to make it into bars! You might also want to cut the apples into smaller chunks instead of slices in this case, although some people love the layered apples even inside bars.
