In the Shade of the Trees, in the Shadow of the Flames

Chayim Israel Perl was born in 1925 in the little town of Visho and at the age of four moved to the village of Schiff in Maramures County in Romania. In early May 1944 he was expelled with the rest of the Dargomirest ghetto to Auschwitz, and after the selection he was transferred from Auschwitz to Buchenwald, Dora-Mittelbau, and was finally liberated from Bergen Belsen in April 1945.

He was sent to Sweden by the Red Cross. In December 1947 he set sail for Palestine on the immigrant (“Ma’apilim”) ship known as the “29th of November 1946”. After several unsuccessful attempts to land, he was arrested as an illegal immigrant by the British Royal Navy and deported to a DP camp in Cyprus.

In February 1949, he finally reached the “haven of peace” and shortly after joined the Israel Defense Forces. He studied education at the Teachers’ Seminar in Jerusalem and worked in teaching and education for 30 years. He currently resides in Ramat Gan.

The reader who becomes absorbed into Chayim Perl’s book will discover a vanished world as well as a new-ancient dawn, which a young generation built with its dreams and sacrifices. I recommend these memoirs from the bottom of my heart. I am confident that they will find their way to tens of thousands of readers near and far.  From the forward by Nobel Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel
