The Secret to Why Trusting Hashem WORKS 

I recently discovered a secret to how bitachon – trust in Hashem – works. This question has always bothered me, and I’m sure  I’m not the only one: You just trust and that’s it? Could it be that easy? How does trusting Hashem to take care of you, or get something in particular, make it happen?   

Rabbi Arush explains a great answer – let’s call it the “revealed” answer. If you don’t trust Hashem, then it’s a humiliation to God. What, God, Who loves you and Who is all good, doesn’t want to do good for you? How could it be? So if you don’t really trust Hashem, and don’t really believe that He is your Father in Heaven Who wants to give you everything even more than you want it – then of course it will be difficult for your prayers to be answered.   

Prayers are answered according to the emuna in them. Thanking Hashem – really thanking, feeling thankful, feeling that you are in Hashem’s good Hands and He knows what He is doing, saying “Thank You for this suffering!” – is perfect emuna. It also is perfect trust in Hashem. Hence, the prayers are answered.  

To the degree that this feeling of deep trust and emuna is lacking, this makes it less likely for the prayer to be answered. Now, all sorts of different judgements come into place to determine if the answer is yes or no.   

And if, G-d forbid, the person is just paying lip service by saying “thank You” while feeling “How could You do this to me?” etc.— this is a humiliation for Hashem. The person really thinks God hates him or is acting out of malice or unfairness. Consequently,  those prayers will not be answered, and that person might even face judgment for their complaints and hidden anger at Hashem!  

It’s a very important answer to understand to its depth. It’s part of the reason of why What You Believe in – You Get!  

Here’s the secret of how and why trust in Hashem works: Everything we do, think, and feel creates either angels or demons.  These entities are real in the spiritual realm, and they affect on a person!  

The Vilna Gaon teaches that every action creates an angel or a demon, which are essentially spiritual forces. The more intention, will,  desire, and effort that you invest in that action, the greater the size, strength, and quality that spiritual force becomes.  

Let’s use the example of someone being threatened. If they close their eyes and take a jagged breath and truly believe with all their heart and soul the spiritual rule: “NOTHING AND NO ONE CAN HURT ME IF IT IS NOT DECREED BY HASHEM!”  

This creates a massive guardian angel!  

And that angel now actually protects them!!!  

Our emuna and trust in Hashem creates a new reality!   

Now that this person feels bitachon pulsing through every fiber of their being, NOW they are indeed protected by the angel they created with their bitachon in Hashem!   

THIS is the mechanism by which “you get what you believe in and what you pray for.” Because when you really believe it, an  angel is created that makes it happen!

In The Garden of Emuna, Rabbi Arush promises that anyone who actively seeks Hashem’s Divine Providence and prays for His protection will receive absolute divine protection. Under this complete protection, no harm can befall them unless Hashem explicitly planned it for their ultimate good. Conversely, as discussed in Do You Want to Kick God Out?, lacking this faith removes that  protection—G-d forbid—leaving a person vulnerable to random events that do not serve their absolute best interest.  

Why? Because they lack those guardian angels to protect them from harmful events! 

While the danger might be real, emuna and bitachon are far more powerful than any force of evil. This absolute confidence is captured in the Gemara (Sanhedrin 67b), where R’ Hanina fearlessly challenges a witch trying to gather dirt from his footsteps, saying: “Go ahead, take the dust! Try to cast your spell! It will never work, because the Torah says: ‘There is none else besides Him.’ “(Devarim 4:35)  

The most important thing is to pray to Hashem and ask Him to give you perfect emuna and perfect trust in Him. 

When you do feel afraid, remember that on the seesaw of emuna, the counterweight to fear is ratzon (will).  

State your will – “I don’t WANT to be afraid! Hashem, help me overcome the fear! Enable me to feel only emuna and trust in You!”  Thus, whatever your body might be experiencing, you clearly stated your will – and you are judged on your will! Just keep “placing it on your heart” over and over.   

Say out loud: “Hashem loves me. He only does good for me, and He protects me. Nothing can harm me unless He decrees it, and if He does, it is for my absolute best. Only good comes from Him, and it only gets better and better!”
