The Link Between 15th Shevat & 7 Noahide Laws

On Tu B'Shvat, it is customary to have a “Seder” similar to a Passover Seder. What is the connection between the seven fruits that are eaten at the “Seder” and the seven Noahide Commandments?

Below is the correlation between the seven fruits of Israel and the  corresponding seven Noahide Commandments. You can discuss each fruit with its Divine power and spiritual work during your Tu B’Shvat Seder. 

 

The Biblical source is in Deuteronomy Chapter 8, verse 8: 

:אֶ֤רֶץ חִטָּה֙ וּשְׂעֹרָ֔ה וְגֶ֥פֶן וּתְאֵנָ֖ה וְרִמּ֑וֹן אֶֽרֶץ־זֵ֥ית שֶׁ֖מֶן וּדְבָֽשׁ 

“… a land of wheat and barley, vines and figs and pomegranates, a land of oil producing olives and honey.” 

 

Wheat: Corresponds to the 4th Noahide Commandment to honor family unity. 

The Divine Power: Loving-Kindness.  

The Spiritual Work: The divine soul needs to increase in generosity and innovation. 

 

Barley: Corresponds to the 3rd Noahide Commandment to honor life.  

The Divine Power: Strength.  

The Spiritual Work: The animal soul needs to submit itself to the divine will. 

 

Grapes: Corresponds to the 5th Noahide Commandment to honor others’ property. 

The Divine Power: Beauty.  

The Spiritual Work: To increase joy and balance in the service of Hashem. 

 

Fig: Corresponds to the 1st Noahide Commandment to have faith in Hashem.  

The Divine Power: Victory.  

The Spiritual Work: To refine the garments of our soul: thought, speech, and deed. 

 

Pomegranate: Corresponds to the 2nd Noahide Commandment to honor Hashem. 

The Divine Power: Splendor.  

The Spiritual Work: To fulfill the commandments of Torah for Noahides. 

 

Olive: Corresponds to the 6th Noahide Commandment to respect animals and nature.  

The Divine Power: Foundation.  

The Spiritual Work: To sweeten our relationships. 

 

Dates: Corresponds to the 7th Noahide Commandment to establish courts and pursue justice.  

The Divine Power: Kingship.  

The Spiritual Work: To accept that the messianic revelation comes after a life of long and persistent spiritual work.
